Dr. Algimantas Čepas is the director of Vilnius Institute for Advanced Studies and an associate professor in law at the Department of Sociology (Faculty of Philosophy) of Vilnius University (since 2010). Algimantas Čepas also holds positions of the President of the Lithuanian Society for Criminology (since 2016) and the Director of the Center for Crime Prevention in Lithuania (since 2016). He has acquired his PhD in law from Vilnius University in 2002 and has held a number of important positions both in academia and legal institutions of Lithuania since then. He has served as the director of the Law Institute of Lithuania by the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Lithuania, an advisor to the Minister of Justice of the Republic of Lithuania, an advisor to the Committee of Law and Order of the Parliament of the Republic of Lithuania, as well as a lecturer at Vilnius University Faculty of Law and Mykolas Romeris University Faculty of Law. Currently Dr. Algimantas Čepas is a member of the Judicial Ethics and Discipline Commission, appointed by the President of the Republic of Lithuania, a member of the Lithuanian Educational Council by the Parliament of the Republic of Lithuania, a member of the Interagency Commission on Implementation of the National Program for Crime Prevention and Control by the Government of the Republic of Lithuania, a member of the European Commission's Expert Group on the Policy Needs for Data on Crime, etc. He has also previously served as the chairman of the “Transparency International” Lithuanian Chapter, expert-evaluator of the Council of Europe's Group of States against Corruption (GRECO), a member of the Working Group created by the Board of the Parliament of the Republic of Lithuania for the final drafting of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Lithuania,  a national contact point of the EU Crime Prevention Network in Lithuania, a member of the Board of the Lithuanian Association of Criminology, etc. Algimantas Čepas is a member of editorial boards of research journals “Teisės problemos”, “Teisė”, “Kriminologijos studijos”, has been a member of the Organisational Committee of 11th Annual Conference of the European Society of Criminology Rethinking Crime and Punishment in Europe and a member of the Program Committee of the University of Maribor and Michigan State University bi-annual conference Criminal Justice and Security in Central and Eastern Europe. The major research interests of Dr. A. Čepas lay in the fields of international law, human rights, criminal law, criminology, philosophy of law, public ethics and anticorruption, he has authored more than 30 research publications in the aforementioned fields and has presented results of his research in amplitude of national and international research events. Dr. Algimantas Čepas has headed two interdisciplinary research projects funded by the Research Council of Lithuania (“Homicide in Lithuania: Criminological Research” and “Social Context of Corruption: An Analysis of Macro-, Mezzo-, and Micro- Factors”), as well as participated and  taken the lead on Lithuanian parts in more than 20 international research projects, including “New European Crimes and Trust-Based Policy (FIDUCIA)” (EU 7th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development, 2012-2015), “Crime Repression Costs in Context (CRCC)” (EU 6th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development, 2007-2009).
